The Criterion Collection announced that their next Blu-ray release will be Godzilla: The Showa Era Films, 1954-1975 set.
The set contains all 15 Showa Era Godzilla films, from 1954-1975 and these films are: Godzilla, Godzilla Raids Again, King Kong vs. Godzilla, Mothra vs. Godzilla, Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, Invasion of Astro-Monster, Ebirah, Horror of the Deep, Son of Godzilla, Destroy All Monsters, All Monsters Attack, Godzilla vs. Hedorah, Godzilla vs. Gigan, Godzilla vs. Megalon, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, and Terror of Mechagodzilla.
Aside from these 15 movies, the set will also include the Godzilla, King of the Monsters, the 1956 U.S. version of Godzilla and the Japanese version of King Kong vs. Godzilla. In addition, the English language dub tracks for the following films: Invasion of Astro-Monster, Son of Godzilla, Destroy All Monsters, Godzilla vs. Megalon, Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla, and Terror of Mechagodzilla are also available in this set. All films are available in HD with uncompressed monaural soundtracks and contained in 8 discs.
Other extras included in this release include: 2011 audio commentaries on Godzilla and Godzilla, King of the Monsters from film historian David Kalat; a 1990 interview with director Ishiro Honda with the Directors Guild of Japan conducted by director Yoshimitsu Banno; new and archival interviews from various cast and crew members; a 2011 interview with critic Tadao Sato; a new interview with filmmake Alex Cox and his admiration for Showa Era Godzilla films; programs detailing the creation of Godzilla's special effects and unused effects sequences from Toho releases including Destroy All Monsters; a 2011 illustrated audio essay about the real-life tragedy that inspired Godzilla subtitled in English; and trailers.
All of these are packaged in an illustrated deluxe hardcover book, which features an essay by cinema historian Steve Ryfle, notes on the films by cinema historian Ed Godziszewski, and new illustrations by Arthur Adams, Sophie Campbell, Becky Cloonan, Jorge Coelho, Geof Darrow, Simon Gane, Robert Goodin, Benjamin Marra, Monarobot, Takashi Okazaki, Angela Rizza, Yuko Shimizu, Bill Sienkiewicz, Katsuya Terada, Ronald Wimberly, and Chris Wisnia.
