Sony announced that they have acquired the world's largest fighting game tournament, Evolution Championship Series, or better known to most as Evo.
Sony Interactive Entertainment and Endeavor's esports venture RTS have acquired the "assets and properties" of said tournament series. What it means that all future Evo events are effectively Sony PlayStation events in partnership with RTS. Evo co-founders Tony and Tom Cannon will still remain as key advisors.
Aside from this acquisition, Evo also announced the dates for the Evo Online 2021 event. The games that are part of this online tournament are: Tekken 7, Street Fighter 5: Champion Edition, Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate, and Guilty Gear -Strive-. The event will run from August 6-8, and then in August 13-15. Details for the online qualifiers will be shared in later weeks.
Lastly, even though Evo is effectively, a PlayStation event, Evo business developer Mark Julio stated in a tweet that Evo is still "open to all platforms," and that PlayStation and RTS are allowing Julio's team to work with its community to support fighting games as a whole. As for fans of Super Smash Bros., in a comment with IGN, Nintendo stated that they will continue to assess Evo, and other opportunities as they plan future online and offline Super Smash Bros. tournament events.
