Sunrise Beyond (formerly known as Xebec) and Bandai Spirits announced a new mecha anime project called Kyoukai Senki (translates as War Machines on the Borderline).
Taking place in the year 2061, Japan is under a state of occupation by multiple states. The world, including Japan, has been consolidated under the rule of four trade blocs with the entire archipelago now the frontline of the conflict. In this state of constant occupation and oppression, humanoid war machines called AMAIM patrol the streets. A young introverted boy named Amo Shiiba has a chance meeting with the autonomous AI Gai, and the story kicks off as he attempts to take back Japan with his newly acquired AMAIM Kenbu.
The series will be directed by Nobuyoshi Habara (Star Blazers: Space Battleship Yamato 2202) with Noboru Kimura (Gundam Build Divers) as the script supervisor. Kenichi Ohnuki (Gundam Build Fighters) is designing the characters, while Rasmus Faber (The Asterisk War) will compose the music.
Industrial designer Ken Okuyama (fourth generation Chevrolet Camaro, E6 and E7 Series Shinkansen trains) and his Ken Okuyama Design company are credited for mechanical design supervision, while the company's designer Yuya Koyanagi is credited for mechanical design alongside Kanetake Ebikawa, Kenji Teraoka, and Ippei Gyōbu. Bandai Spirits on the other hand, will produce the show's model kits.
Kyoukai Senki is set to premiere this fall.
