It was announced that actor Tori Matsuzaka (Samurai Sentai Shinkenger) will star in the live-action In This Corner of the World drama alongside with actress Honoka Matsumoto (Koi wa Ameagari no You ni).
Based on Fumiyo Kono's manga of the same name, the series takes place during World War II and follows Suzu who moves from Eba to Kure in the Prefecture due to her marriage and starts her everyday life as a bride with the Hojo family.
Matsuzaka will play the role of Shusaku Hojo, while Matsumoto will play his eventual wife, Suzu Urano. Matsumoto was chosen from the 3,000 participants who auditioned for the role and to prepare for it, she starts to wear wooden Japanese sandals and not stopped eating her favorite western sweets. She also took special cooking and sewing classes to better understand her character.
Matsumoto commented about the series, "I hope it becomes a series where people start to think about what matters in life." Matsuzaka also commented, "We are the generation that knows nothing about the war but I want to properly convey things to this era that only we from our generation now can do."
Directed by Nobuhiro Doi (Quartet) with scripts written by Yoshikazu Okada (Churasan, Hiyokko), and music by Joe Hisaishi (My Neighbor Totoro, Departures), In This Corner of the World is set to premiere this July on TBS in Japan.
