Toei Animation announced today, May 9th, also known as Goku Day that Dragon Ball Super will get a new anime film in 2022.
The overall 21st anime film in the franchise, series creator Akira Toriyama will return to work on the film's story, screenplay and character designs. In his message, he revealed that planning for the film started in 2018 prior to the release of Dragon Ball Super: Broly, and that the film will feature an unexpected character, and its goal is to tell a "large-scale story".
In addition, he also revealed that the film will charter through, "unexplored territory in terms of the visual aesthetics to give the audience an amazing ride." It is unknown if the upcoming film will adapt the Dragon Ball Super manga's Galactic Patrol Prisoner Arc, the currently on-going Granolah the Survivor Arc, or it will be a brand new story. Both the Galactic Patrol Prisoner and the Granolah the Survivor Arcs take place after the events of the Dragon Ball Super: Broly film.
