Born with the name Akira in 1938 at Kurume City in Fukuoka Prefecture, he made his debut as a manga artist in 1953 with Honeybee's Adventure, while still in high school. He later moved to Tokyo after high school, and became a shojo manga creator in the 1950s, and later adopted the Leiji Matsumoto pen name in 1965.
He is best known for his works such as Space Pirate Captain Harlock, Galaxy Express 999, Queen Emeraldas, and his work with the designs and the tie-in Space Battleship Yamato series. He also worked with Daft Punk for the film, INTERSTELLA 5555. From all of us here, thank you for the memories.
