Japan Today reported that the name of the next era after the Heisei Era will be announced on April 1st, a month before the ascension of the new emperor, Crown Prince Naruhito on May 1st.
It is likely the announcement of the new era name or gengo will be revealed at the cabinet meeting. The plan is that on April 1st, the government will hear opinions from experts in various fields, as well as chiefs and deputies of both houses of the Diet, "about multiple candidate names before cabinet approval and proclamation by the emperor."
The gengo is used during the duration of the emperor's reign and even though Japan uses the Gregorian calendar like the rest of the world, the gengo is still widely used in calendars, newspapers, and official documents. This is where various multimedia franchises comes in as the eras of various franchises, such as Kamen Rider and Godzilla use the current gengo to divide the eras of their respective franchises. To put it simply, the next entry to any of these franchises is the first entry of the new era.
