In a recent interview with Comic Natalie, Highschool of the Dead and Triage X artist Shoji Sato revealed that it is "not easy" to continue the Highschool of the Dead manga.
The last time the series got a new chapter was back in 2013, but because the series' writer Daisuke Satou passed away back in 2017 due ischemic heart disease. The series was on a hiatus due to the writer's health. Sato only draws the series and has no idea about the plot and often receives comments from overseas fans about continuing the series who are not aware of the situation. The artist stated, "although it pains my heart, too, that the series went on hiatus, just thinking about Daisuke Satou makes me think that I cannot carelessly get involved in [Highschool of the Dead]."
Triage X editor Kawanakajima also stated that realistically, no one in the world could inherit Daisuke Satou's vision and continue the series the way the original author wanted. They need someone who knew his plans for the rest of the series and the ability to execute it properly. The editor also stated that it is common practice for overseas comics and novels to have multiple collaborators who will continue the series after the original author passed away, but in the case of Highschool of the Dead, Satou is the only one who can write it easily and wants the overseas fans to understand it.
