The official Dragon Quest game website announced that series composer Koichi Sugiyama has passed away due to septic shock last September 30th. He was 90 years old.
He has been the composer for the Dragon Quest series since its first game back in 1986. Since then, he has composed over 500 pieces for the series. The 12th main entry of the series, Dragon Quest XII: The Flames of Fate will be his last work. Aside from Dragon Quest, he also composed the music for the second Cyborg 009 anime, Space Runaway Ideon, Magic Knight Rayearth, Godzilla vs. Biollante, and of course, various Dragon Quest anime, including the original Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai anime.
Even with that legacy, he is also a controversial figure, most notably he wrote a letter that opposed the Japanese government to apologized to "comfort women", the denial of the occurence of the Nanking Massacre, and decrying LGBTQ+ individuals as "unproductive" because they don't have children, and even dismissed concerns about high suicide rates within said community.
