The Hollywood Reporter reported that Tsukasa Hojo's popular City Hunter manga will finally get a live-action Japanese film adaptation.
Though the series had multiple live-action adaptations in the past, namely: 1993's City Hunter (Hong Kong film), 2011's City Hunter (South Korean TV series), and 2018's Nicky Larson et le parfum de Cupidon (French film), this is the first time the manga received a live-action film adaptation made in Japan.
This film will star Ryohei Suzuki (Tokyo MER, Hentai Kamen) as Ryo Saeba in this modern day adaptation of the manga set in the bustling streets of Shinjuku. When Ryo's partner, Makimura is killer, he and Makimura's sister, Kaori team up to find out the truth, thus forming a new duo. About the adaptation, he states that it will "aim to strike the right balance between realism and fantasy, as well as tones from the '80s and today." He is also aware of the pressure in assuming the mantle of such an iconic character.
The film is written by Tatsuhiro Mishima (live-action Yu Yu Hakusho) and is directed by Yuichi Sato (Kisaragi, Strawberry Nights). In addition, it will feature music composed by Yoshihide Otomo (INU-OH, Lupin Zero) with Shinichi Takahashi serving as executive producers, Keisuke Sanpei and Kosuke Oshida as producers. City Hunter is set for a 2024 release, worldwide on Netflix.
