It was announced that former AKB48 member Atsuko Maeda (Majisuka Gakuen, Hana Kimi 2011) will star in the From Truant to Anime Screenwriter: My Path to "anohana" and "The Anthem of the Heart" drama special.
The actress will play the role of Mari Okada in the special. The special is based on the autobiography written by prolific anime screenwriter Mari Okada. The special being based on Okada's life will feature footage from some of her anime works. In the original book, the writer described her strained relationship with her mother, her life as a shut-in who could not make herself attend school, and how she managed to graduate high school and become a prolific screenwriter. Okada herself will write the screenplay for this special.
Okada is best known for her work in anohana: The Flower We Saw That Day, Mobile Suit Gundam: Iron-Blooded Orphans, Hanasaku Iroha - Blossoms for Tomorrow, AKB0048, A Lull in the Sea, The Anthem of the Heart, and Kiznaiver.
Other cast members include: Shunsuke Daito (Ouran High School Host Club), Kenta Hamano (Kamen Rider Drive), Mijika Nagai (Paradise Kiss), Yoichi Nukumizu (Lupinranger vs. Patranger), Toru Nomaguchi (Kamen Rider Drive), Yoji Tanaka (Mischievous Kiss: Love in Tokyo), Hirotaro Honda (Kamen Rider Kabuto), and Yasuko Tomita (Kimi ni Todoke).
The upcoming special is directed by Hideki Fujinami and will feature music composed by Yukari Hashimoto (March comes in like a lion). This special will air on NHK's BS Premium channel on September 1st from 10pm to 11:29pm.
