The film stars Takumi Saitoh (Ace Attorney, Shin Godzilla), Masami Nagasawa (Godzilla: Tokyo SOS, Gintama), and Hidetoshi Nishijima (Drive My Car). Also part of the film's cast are: Hey! Say! JUMP! member Daiki Arioka (Code Blue 3), Akari Hayami (Gintama), Tetsuji Tanaka (Bloody Monday), Koji Yamamoto (Nintama Rantaro, Kamen Rider Zero-One), Keishi Nagatsuka (Suspect X), Kyusaku Shimada (Shin Godzilla), Toru Masuoka (Kamen Rider x Kamen Rider Fourze & OOO Movie Taisen MEGA MAX), Hajime Yamazaki (Kamen Rider Fourze), Ryo Iwamatsu (March Comes in Like a Lion), and Soukou Wada (Liar Game).
A big screen adaptation of the original 1966 Ultraman series, the film will be written and produced by famed director Hideaki Anno (Neon Genesis Evangelion) with Shin Godzilla collaborator Shinji Higuchi (Gamera Trilogy) directing the said project. The film also features music by Shiro Sagisu (Neon Genesis Evangelion, Bleach).
Distributed by Toho, part of the Ultraman franchise's 55th anniversary celebrations, the film was originally planned for an early summer 2021 release, but was postponed due to the production delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. Shin Ultraman is currently set for a May 13th release in Japan.
