It was announced by the staff of the live-action Chihayafuru films during a stage greeting event for the 2nd film that a sequel is currently in the works.
In addition to that, TOHO posted a digest video, which summarizes the events of the first film, just in time for the release of the second film, Chihayafuru: Shimo no Ku, which premiered last April 29th.
The first two film stars Suzu Hirose (Crows Explode) as Chihaya Ayase, Shuhei Nomura (live-action Daily Lives of High School Boys) as Taichi Mashima, and Mackenyu (Kamen Rider Drive: Surprise Future) as Arata Wataya. Taichi and Arata are Chihaya's childhood friends with Taichi being the one who got the two into karuta.
Also part of the cast are: Yuki Morinaga (Kanojo wa Uso o Ai Shisugiteru) as Tsutomu Komano, Yuma Yamamoto (Silver Spoon) as Yusei Nishida, Mone Kamishiraishi as Kanade Oue. These three are members of the Mizusawa High Competitive Karuta Club. Joining the cast in this film is actress Maya Matsuoka (Amachan, The Kirishima Thing) as Shinobu Wakamiya.
