Variety reported that the live-action Akira film will be filmed entirely in California, with the project getting a US$18.5 million tax credit.
Because of this, the film must start production within 180 days to receive the tax credit. The film is scheduled to shoot for 71 days in California and it will generate an estimate of US$92 million in qualified spending, which includes US$43 million in wages to 200 below-the-line crew members and more than 5,000 extras.
Director Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) is currently attached to direct the film and revealed in previous interviews that he plans to adapt the original manga, not remake the anime film. The upcoming film is said to take place in a rebuilt New Manhattan in which a leader of a biker gang saves his friend from a medical experiment. The project is said to be composed of two films, with each film tackling three volumes of Katsuhiro Otomo's original work.
The film is produced by Mad Chance's Andrew Lazar alongside with Leonardo DiCaprio and Appian Way Production's Jennifer Davisson.
