Deadline reported that Warner Bros. has removed the live-action Akira film in their release schedule.
Last update we have about said film was that Warner Bros. has delayed the production for the film, which was originally slated to start in fall and was scheduled for a May 21, 2021 release. Later in October, director Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok) revealed that the filming schedule for Akira gets pushed back was due to the staff "working hard" on the script, until its production overlapped with his duties in directing the upcoming Marvel Studios film, Thor: Love and Thunder. He added, "Now we've had to take Akira and shift it around to the tail end of Thor and move it down a couple of years", and states that they will still make the film.
Waititi previously stated in interviews that he plans to adapt the original manga, not remake the anime film, with the director stating that he would want to cast Asian actors in the roles. The manga takes place in a rebuilt Tokyo in which a leader of a biker gang saves his friend from a medical experiment. The project is said to be composed of two films, with each film tackling three volumes of Katsuhiro Otomo's original work.
The film is produced by Mad Chance's Andrew Lazar alongside with Leonardo DiCaprio and Appian Way Production's Jennifer Davisson.
