Akira manga creator and director Katsuhiro Otomo announced at this year's Anime Expo that a new adaptation based on his Akira manga is in the works.
This new project will be animated by Sunrise and according to Sunrise president and CEO Makoto Asanuma, the upcoming project will incorporate the entirety of the manga's story. Take note, the original 1988 Akira anime film was made while the manga was still ongoing in Weekly Young Magazine. The original manga's serialization ended in 1990.
In addition, the original Akira film will get a 4K remaster, which is set for an April 24, 2020 release in Japan. The original manga takes place in a rebuilt Tokyo in which a leader of a biker gang saves his friend from a medical experiment.
