So yeah, I decided to write new reviews to some of the reviews that I find unsatisfactory, but also write new reviews to those reviews that I can't retrieve. Since 2016 marks Super Sentai's 40th anniversary celebrations (technically, the franchise celebrated its 40th anniversary last year), I decided to start it with Kaizoku Sentai Gokaiger... and I will also use this opportunity to watch the show again, this time, in Blu-ray quality. That being said, it is time to start my review of the series.
More on this scene, one of the best parts about it are that teams with similar themes fighting together. In this scene alone, we have Gekiranger and Dairanger (Chinese martial arts), Turboranger and Carranger (vehicles), and Kakuranger and Hurricaneger (ninjas) fight foot soldiers and highlight their individual skills in just a short amount of time. Another neat scene is that the scene tried to cram in as many of the popular teams as possible, some of those teams are Jetman and Zyuranger. But sadly, they can't highlight all the teams due to time constraints. Oh, and AkaRanger's actor voiced his character in this scene. That being said, it is time to wrap up the Legendary War scene.
After the 34 Super Sentai teams sacrificed their powers to save everyone, years later, a group of pirates arrived to our planet in search of the Greatest Treasure of the Universe. At the get go, I easily got an impression that the Gokaigers are badasses, especially their captain, Captain Marvelous. The way they shot his hand holding the Ranger Keys and the fact that his crew are looking up to him made me easily respect the guy without him doing anything of note outside of holding those Ranger Keys. It didn't help that we later see the team in action fighting the Zangyack armada their mecha, Gokai-Oh without even breaking a sweat!
It showed us that Joe is a silent badass, Luka likes money, Ahim is someone with manners, and Doc is well, a coward. Because Earthlings have no idea where this treasure is found and it seems that they'll be staying here for a while, Luka is forced by Marvy to surrender one of her rings so that they can have some Earth money. It's a really funny scene and it just summed up Luka's character perfectly.
But, if you are a fan of Taiyou Sentai Sun Vulcan or a long time fan of the franchise, you can easily recognize the sign as something that belonged to the series, making you go nostalgic about Sun Vulcan and why it is so awesome. We will see more subtle nods to other seasons similar to this one later in the series, and I can't wait to spot all of them all over again. Back to the plot, before the team can have their first bite, the Zangyack began their next wave of attack to planet Earth, giving us one of the best uses of slow motion for the sake of some good comedy. But good comedy turns to danger as they realized what's happening to the planet right now.
The team's transformation sequence looks really cool. What I love about it is how the Roman numeral for 35, XXXV formed their costumes. The effect looked simple, but it gets the point across that this is the 35th Super Sentai team. That being said, the team's first on-screen battle is really great. I just love that they switch weapons from time to time, showing us their capabilities in their battlefield and what they are really good at in battle. It didn't help that during the fight, we get some cuts featuring the bystanders observing and pretty much telling the kids who are with them that this is the 35th team. This scene becomes handy when they finally did the very first Gokai Change to a different Super Sentai on TV.
The next two Gokai Change to other Super Sentai were interesting to say at least. I didn't notice it at first, but I realized that the changes they made, Shinkenger and Magiranger are really interesting. For starters, Shinkenger is the most popular Super Sentai show in recent memory while Magiranger will have a special Gokaiger mecha, and it will be the first mecha the Gokaiger will obtain in the series if you just based it on the toy catalog at that time this episode first aired. Anyway, as for their standard finisher, it was... pretty standard. Nothing much to say about a laser sword slashes.
