The official live-action Chihayafuru film website posted the trailer for the film's upcoming sequel, Chihayafuru: Conclusion. The trailer features the song "Mugen Mirai" by Perfume.
The stars of the previous two films, Suzu Hirose (Crows Explode), Shuhei Nomura (live-action Daily Lives of High School Boys), and Mackenyu Arata (Kamen Rider Drive: Surprise Future) will reprise their roles as Chihaya Ayase, Taichi Mashima, and Arata Wataya respectively. The sequel takes place two years after the events of the first two films and will feature the trio in their third year of high school.
Other cast members that will reprise their roles for the sequel are:
- Mone Kamishiraishi (Your Name) as Kanade Oe
- Yuma Yamato (Dawn Wind in My Poncho) as Yusei Nishida
- Yuki Morinaga (The Liar and His Lover) as Tsutomu Komano
- Hiroya Shimizu (The World of Kanako) as Akihito Sudo
- Mayu Matsuoka (A Silent Voice) as Shinobu Wakamiya
- Miyuki Matsuda (Audition) as Taeko Miyauchi
- Jun Kunimura (Shin Godzilla) as Harada

The movie started filming last spring 2017. The film's director, Norihiro Koizumi (Midnight Sun) notes that since its been two years since they filmed the first film, the new film will also take place two years after it. He also stated that the film will also portray the love triangle between Chihaya, Taichi, and Arata, and will finally settle the rivalry between Chihaya and Shinobu Wakamiya, the current karuta queen.
Lastly, the creator of the original manga, Yuki Suetsugu has approved the film's script. Chihayafuru: Conclusion is set for a March 17, 2018 release in Japan.
