Variety reported that Mighty Morphin Power Rangers star Amy Jo Johnson's upcoming Power Rangers comic book series will be released next year.
This is after Boom Studios' "Power Rangers: A 30th Anniversary Comic Book Celebration" Kickstarter campaign raised US$250,000 in less than 24 hours. Johnson will co-write this project with her partner, director Matt Hotson. She recalls coming up with the idea of the story before the pandemic hit in 2020, in which Matt suggested to write what she's been daydreaming into a comic book. She promises that this new series would be "different" from the original, in a sense that it would be her version of the story.
She revealed in Emerald City Comic Con 2021 that her comic book series will be a "family reunion" type of story in which the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are now in their mid-40s. It is unknown if said detail will be the same in the upcoming comic book series. The artist for the series hasn't been announced as of this writing.

For inspiration, she went back and watched Mighty Morphin Power Rangers for the first time. In addition, she also revealed another reason on why she didn't join the cast of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Once & Always reunion film, in which revealed that there are a lot of factors that come into play, which includes her having a 14-year-old kid, and working on other projects. In recent years, Johnson has been focused on writing and directing, most notably, she directed an episode of Superman & Lois. She can also give a list of excuses on why.
She also adds that the thought about the reunion did not occur to her because she was focused on the comic book and telling its story. Johnson is excited that her fans will get to experience the new comic book series. She states that this is her thank you and love letter to the fans. She adds, "It's just been incredible to have these kids who are now adults support me through all of [my career] changes."
